AMK Law are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have been named as state finalists in the Indigenous Excellence category of the Telstra Best of Business Awards 2021.

These awards follow an extremely rigorous nomination and judging process, and attract an incredibly high calibre of businesses, from right across Australia.

This year, there were 24,000 nominations. Receiving state finalist recognition is, therefore, quite an incredible achievement.

About the Telstra Best of Business Awards

The Telstra Best of Business Awards were created to give small and medium-sized businesses a platform to celebrate achievements and stories with their peers, and opportunities to learn from Australia’s best business minds.

Telstra believe that small and medium-sized businesses play a unique and essential role as the foundation for Australia’s financial, cultural and social prosperity. They therefore deserve to be rewarded and recognised to keep the country moving forward and to inspire the next generation. These awards are regarded as the most prestigious business awards in the country.

The awards are broken down into eight categories and judged accordingly, including:

  • Progressing Australia
  • Accelerating Women
  • Championing Health
  • Building Communities
  • Indigenous Excellence
  • Embracing Innovation
  • Promoting Sustainability
  • Outstanding Growth.

About the ‘Indigenous Excellence’ category

The Indigenous Excellence category is for Indigenous-led, owned and operated small and medium-sized businesses succeeding through entrepreneurialism, innovation and inspiring the next generation of all Australians.

Telstra believes that by embracing, learning and celebrating our First Australian’s, it will make Australia stronger and more united as a country.

Some of the examples of achievement include:

  • Goals of change
  • Inspiring practices
  • Innovative approach
  • Strong growth
  • Achieving ambitions.

What the ‘Indigenous Excellence’ category means to us

AMK Law is a proud Aboriginal-owned business with a firm mission to contribute to the Indigenous community.

We commit to this by offering affordable support services, engaging in pro-bono and sub-contract work and travelling to remote parts of Australia to deliver educational workshops.

Plus, our innovative, template-based legal document service has proven to be a real winner for keeping costs down for smaller businesses.

Relationships are absolutely everything for us as a close-knit team and small boutique law firm. We communicate with and support our clients, both prospective and existing, in detail, to ensure we deliver the best possible outcomes.

Going that extra mile has served us well as an Indigenous business. We like to think that being generous with our time and attention has a positive ripple effect on businesses and communities.

As a result, it’s really exciting to be recognised for our Indigenous contributions and our business success.

The extensive process to get us to state finalist

The Telstra Best of Business Awards follow a very extensive process to take the thousands of nominations and narrow them down to the winners.

Stage 1 was a simple and straightforward multiple-choice questionnaire and assessment of our business and our success thus far. This stage was assessed on economic sustainability, operational effectiveness, progressive leadership and culture, and social and community contribution.

Next, we needed to prepare a short, written response and a 3 – 4-minute video for judging in Stage 2. This was designed to gain a more detailed insight into AMK Law and who we are as a business.

Stage 3 was the most time-intensive and was designed to understand how we might pitch our business in the real-world to prospective partners and investors. The judges were looking at our communication skills, business expertise, our story and future plans and to gain proof of our success.

Finally, we underwent a 30-minute question and answer session with the judging panel to discuss our submission in more detail. The highest scoring businesses were named state finalists in their categories, which excitingly, included us.

What happens next?

From here, the state winners will be announced in early 2022.

State winners then go on to national judging.

Regardless of whether or not we progress any further, we’re incredibly proud to have been selected as Indigenous Excellence state finalists.

AMK Law acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we are fortunate to live and work. We pay our respects to Elders, both past and present and further acknowledge the important role that Indigenous people continue to play within our communities.
